Yeah, except that there are times when its grammatically required to
italicize certain things within your text, such as names of books and other
proper titles within quoted speach. ASCII Text is not sufficient for actual
grammatical correctness, however we have accepted it, and made a real hash
out of the rules for grammar in order to accommodate it.

Rule 1: People Are Stupid!
1a: It's not my Fault!
1b: I just wish people wouldn't try so hard to prove Rule 1.

It has its applications and uses.  However, HTML is rather excessive for
most of the types of stories posted to this list - and anyone who has a
problem with writing in plain text in general, has a problem writing.
(I emphasize "in general": it has its place for some stories, but if you
don't think you can write without bolding and italics - or multiple font
colors and sizes, or other advanced HTML options - then chances are you
can't write well even with those.)
