[FFML] My own story ideas file

 I actually did have a story idea that I started, but just couldn't bring myself to finish.  It was a Case Closed/Batman crossover, but the main protagonist from the Batman side would be...Edward Nygma, aka the Riddler.  This was during a time in the comics when he'd been legitimately trying to go straight as a high-priced private detective.
Why didn't I ever finish it?  Because, quite frankly, I don't like Shinichi Kudo/Conan Edogawa.  And the conceit that the Kaito Kid can pull h is way out of any sort of trap is, well--boring.  I realized that I wouldn't have been able to give Conan due credit. Dick Grayson in the comics has admitted that the Riddler is a better detective than him--which makes the Riddler more than a match for Conan.  And that felt like I was just beating up the kid.

The story would have gone something like this:  Edward is given a sort of audition by the heir to a rich family.  He not only passes with flying colors, he also goes the extra mile in outing the "man" in front of him as a woman.  Impressed and annoyed, the heir offers him a case that will relieve Edward of the tedium of Gotham high society.
Cut to a few months later in Japan. 
Ran reads an article about how a famous American detectiveis going to arrive guarding a rare gem. It's at this time that Kogoro finds a letter signed simply "E.N." inviting him and whomever he chooses to meet at the airport.



The detective in question turns out to be none other thanEdward Nygma, AKA the Riddler. Handcuffed to his wrist is a suitcase containing the Spectrum's Eye, agem with supposedly mystical powers. According to legend, the Spectrum's Eye is a golf ball-sized gem thatsenses emotions and intents and glows accordingly. The gem has never been stolen; all thieves have been killedby a mysterious orange light.  Edward hasproclaimed that if the Kaito Kid himself were to show, he would be caught.  He is, in effect, calling out the Kaito Kid.  


In a twist, Edward insists that Kogoro, Ran, and Conan stayclose to him.  None of them trust Edwardvery much because of his past, but he remains polite, suave, and a smoothtalker.  In a few lapses, Ran finds him*almost* charming, and she lets a smile slip once or twice.  Conan tries to kick Edward's shins andankles, but is blocked by the case--which turns out to be made ofnearly-indestructible, regenerating Promethium (the miracle metal of the DC universe--similar to adamantium in the Marvel universe.). 



From the first, Edward knows that something is up withConan.  All the little clues start to addup, and soon Edwards deduces Conan's true identity of Shinichi Kudo.  Does he tellanyone else?  Of course not.  Where would the fun be?  Despite this, Edward admits to Conan that they have something in common:  Due to being highly intelligent, they are both very arrogant and tend to not really relate with "normal" people.


The night of the unveiling, Edward goes to Kogoro, Ran, andConan with a eight pack of Ramune soda.  He givesone to Conan as a peace offering, but Conan doesn't open his bottle.  He's suspicious that Edward might have donesomething to it, so he keeps the bottle in an inside jacket pocket.
One thing leads to another and the illustrious Bruce Wayne appears at the unveiling.  "Bruce," however, is actually the Kaito Kid in disguise.  Edward has the advantage in that he knows Bruce's mannerisms.  The Kaito Kid is eventually caught in a trap and is handed over to police custody.  This lasts only a few minutes before the Kid figures out how to escape from the trap--a contingency that Edward built in, should he get caught in his own trap.  The police are not amused.  The Riddler has caught the Kaito Kid as promised--he never guaranteed that he could be kept that way.  And besides, was it his fault that the police couldn't react fast enough?
What's Edward's final game? The Spectrum's Eye was a feint. He was really intent on investigating the Black Organization, and heknew that Batman would follow him.  Evenif any of the BO members got away, Batman is sufficiently motivated to rootthem out--all, mind you, with little cost to Edward.  All he has to say is that he opposed thissecret organization and is intent on ferreting them out. 


What does that do? Even if he doesn't succeed immediately, this would establish Edward asworld-class detective, not just limited to Gotham City.  Yes, there would have been risk if the Black Organization does poke around--but offing the Riddler would have attracted Batman's attention.  And the last thing that the Black Organization needs is the Justice League poking around.

Again, I freely admit that I shortchanged Conan due to my personal dislike of the character.  This is the one that got away, folks--and for good reason.
