No Need For Enterprise

I own nothing of what I’m about to write.

Also, spoilers for the Tenchiverse, from Tenchi Season 4 and 5, as well as the Tenchi GXP novels, and Paradise War, beyond this point.

You ‘have’ been warned!

Captain’s Log: Stardate XXXXXX

Long range scanners have detected signs that indicate the possible formation of a wormhole, and we are now on course to study this phenomena.

***

Captain Jean-Luc Picard gazed upon the space-time anomaly on the bridge’s main screen. Its appearance resembled Earth’s Aurora Borealis, with a slowly expanding circle of light in its center.

“Data,” Picard turned his gaze to the android Lieutenant Commander. “What do the sensors say?”

“Sensors confirm that this a space-time anomaly of some kind. However, it does not match any previously discovered such phenomena in Federation records.”

Commander Riker’s eyebrow raised in surprise from his seat. “Nothing, Data? That’s a bit hard to believe.”

Data absently nodded. “That is correct. Given the vast number of such situations the Federation has encountered, it is surprising that it does not resemble any that have been previously recorded.”

“Well,” Picard said, as he straightened his uniform blouse, “it looks like we’ll be the first. Mr Data... “

“Captain!” Worf interjected. “Sensors indicate that something is emerging from the anomaly. It seems to be a probe of some kind... it... it’s a crab.” Worf said with some confusion.

Riker and Picard looked at each other in surprise.

“A crab, Mr Worf?” Picard turned to his chief of security.

“Confirmed. It seems to be some kind of probe, designed to resemble a crab.” Data said from his console.

“On screen.” Riker ordered.

The image tightened on the anomaly, showing a mechanical red crab with small lights blinking on it.

“Not something you see everyday.” Riker said softly to the captain,

“We are being scanned.” Worf announced.

Picard forced himself to be calm. It was possible this would be the prelude to an attack, but it could also just be an automated function of the probe.

“The probe is hailing us.” Worf said.

“On screen.” Picard ordered.

The image on the screen changed from a view of the crab-like probe to a girl pre to early teens, with a dark blue short sleeved shirt, green eyes, and large red hair.

“Hello, hello? Is this thing even on?” The girl grumbled in a nasally voice as she seemed to adjust something on the camera.

“Hello.” Picard greeted. “I am Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the Federation starship, Enterprise.”

“Hello. I’m Washu, the greatest scientific genius in the universe. Please, call me Little Washu.” The red-headed child said with complete confidence, and a big grin.

“Self confident, isn’t she?” Riker muttered to himself. The girl looked at him and smirked, as if she’d heard him, even though Riker had been certain it wouldn’t be picked up by their vocal sensors and transmitted.

Picard felt his frustration rise. He’d never been much of one for children, never having had them himself, and not having been around many since his own childhood. While his being forced to work with a group of children during an accident several years ago had somewhat dampened the irritation, as well as spending time with his nephew, it had never really gone away.

“Little Washu, would it be possible for us to speak to your parents? Or another adult?” Picard asked.

“Sorry, no parents.” Washu said with a smile. “Only one here at the moment is me...” Washu laughed. “Unless you want to talk to my granddaughter, but she’s not much of a conversationalist at the moment.”

Riker, Picard, and Deanna all exchanged glances. ‘Granddaughter?’

Picard turned back to the screen. “I apologise, Little Washu. You see, you resemble a child of our species.”

Washu waved off the apology.

“Not a problem. It’s completely intentional, to be honest.” Washu smirked. “I’m used to it, considering how freaked out the new students would get when they came into my classes, and saw what they thought was a little kid dressed as a professor.” Washu laughed at the memory.

“You’re a professor?” Deanna asked.

“Little Washu, this is Deanna Troi, our ship’s councillor.” Picard introduced Deanna.

“Yeah, former head of the Academy. Though I’ve been on an unintended sabbatical for the past five thousand years or so. Just as well, I hated the political aspects, and it just leaves me more time for my personal research. Airi can have it.”

Picard’s eyebrows raised in surprise. While he’d come across records of humanoids whose life spans were so long, that they had been on Earth thousands of years in the past, few could live as long as this seemingly young child indicated. With the exception of beings such as the Q, of course.

“Unintended?” Riker muttered.

“Yeah, my research assistant went nuts and kidnapped me. Put me in stasis since he knew it was the only way he could keep me under control.”

“Then how did you escape?” Deanna asked.

Washu seemed to study Deanna for a few moments.

“Ah, an empath, right?” Washu asked, curiously. “Didn’t notice at first since you seem to be doing it passively.”

Deanna was surprised. Betazoids were so similar to humans in appearance that, without a medical examination or genetic testing, it was impossible to tell the difference between the two. The fact that this woman could do so just looking at her, and through a view screen, was astounding!

“Yes. I’m half human. My mother is from a race called Betazoids, and are telepaths. I only inherited her empathic abilities, however.”

“Hmm, never encountered that particular race.” Washu said with a curious look on her face. “As for how I escaped, it’s a long story involving my daughter, my future husband, a ditzy cop, and some royalty.”

It was then that the Enterprise bridge crew noticed something floating around near the top of the screen above Washu’s head. Without looking, Washu reached up, and pulled an infant with spiky cyan hair down into view.

“I thought you were still napping.” Washu said with a smile as she began to tickle the baby. The squirming baby began to float up, only for Washu to puller her into her lap, and turned back to the screen. “Sorry, babysitting my granddaughter for a bit.” Washu grinned at the infant. “Looks just like her mom did at that age.”

Deanna smiled at the pair, while Picard was slightly frustrated at the interruption.

“Professor Washu... “

”I told you, call me ‘Little’ Washu.” Washu stated firmly.

Picard took a deep breath to calm himself. “Little Washu, we recently discovered this spatial anomaly. Do you know anything about it?”

Washu gave a careless shrug, as she held her granddaughter.

“Just a little experiment I was conducting.”

“Do you mean you created it?” Picard asked, uncertain if he heard correctly.

While wormholes had been encountered by the Federation many times, the ability to safely create stable wormholes had eluded Federation scientists. They could create unstable ones, or determine if a wormholes was stable or not, but the secret of how to make them stable remained a mystery. That, and the method of targeting where the wormhole would open. For this Washu to have created what appeared to be a stable wormhole was astounding.

It was then that Worf received a message on his console. “Captain.”

Picard and Riker turned to look at the head of security. “Yes, Worf?”

“We have reports of an intruder on the ship. She has been described as... sweeping the corridors?” Worf honestly couldn’t believe it himself.

Washu facepalmed. “Oh good grief.” She muttered. “Would this intruder be a blue-eyed blond woman with dark skin?”

Worf glanced down at his console. “That matches the description.”

Washu sighed and rolled her eyes. “Her name is Mitoto Kuramitsu. She’s a cleaning nut who seems able to end up anywhere in the galaxy when she starts going at it. And I mean that literally.” She shook her head. “Let me get someone to take care of my granddaughter, and I’ll come and get Mitoto. Just make sure you have someone grab her broom and keep it away from her, no matter how much she begs. It’s about the only way to keep her in one place. Otherwise you might find her on your homeworld if you take your eyes off of her.”

Washu got up from her seat, still holding the baby, and reached out to the camera.

“Little Washu,” Picard exclaimed, trying to get her to stay on the channel. But it was too late.

The daughter of Ryoko (and Tenchi) is a... pseudo-canon character. The original author of the Tenchiverse has been releasing several novels building up the background of the Tenchiverse, the True Tenchi novels (which have been officially released in the US) and the Tenchi GXP novels which follow Seina Yamada’s adventures, as well as magazines with glimpses of the future. Tenko, Ryoko and Tenchi’s daughter, is from some of these background bits. Since she hasn’t appeared in the anime or any of the novels, her canonicity is borderline. She’s Tenchi’s oldest child, though the name, Tenko, is purely fanon, as we haven’t heard an official name for her yet. Though, she ‘does’ inherit her mother’s flight ability (a fact which makes Ayeka bluescreen the first time she does it, from the illustrations I’ve seen.) Kind of funny, we know so much about her: the rough identity of her future husband, that she is a hard working student, and will be close with her half-sister, but they never tell us her bleeping name! At least no one has apparently posted it in English to my knowledge.

This is, with the exception of some omakes I’ve been doing occasionally, the first fanfic I’ve written in, probably over a decade. As for my other fan fiction, they aren’t dead, but it’s hard to get over the writer’s block that has caused them to languish for some many years.
