I have to agree with Gary: It’s not the cost to host or the skills to maintain the server, it’s whether or not the traffic justifies the cost and skills. and frankly, this shutdown has been on the horizon for several years now.
Look, I’m gonna miss the list. I learned more here from the feedback I got than I ever did from writing classes. But the older I get, the more I realize that there comes a time to let go. Dennis has even said that listserv tech is pretty much dead and no longer worth it it maintain - one of the reasons he and the admins made the decision to shut it down in the first place.
We’ve all posted links to our web presences. Wiess has fanfic paradise, I still have AO3 invites up for grabs, lemme know if you want one and what email you want me to send it too, and Mad Hamlet’s suggestion of seeing of AO3 or OTW will host the archive is worth looking into. We all have the tools we need to stay in touch with the ones we want to.
Ultimately, though, nostalgia alone is no reason to keep the list up and running. It hurts, but we have to Let It Go.
And now I’m going to sit back and wait for the Frozen jokes. =D

There's little point in doing this if people are not willing to put in the work to make it work. If the list is only going to serve as a conduit for authors to get their stories to readers, there are other venues that can fulfill that function.
