Setting aside the age-old argument of Japanese usage in fanfiction, a 
subject on which I am never going to waver because it's simply a 
personal style preference...

Alright, this is valid and I will address it, but I'll tackle it on two 
fronts.

1. The "kana usage", by which you're referring to the "tsudzuku" image 
at the end. That's just a basic "to be continued" graphic I use across 
my site, even on stories that aren't anime/manga based. Poke around my 
site, you'll see that and "owari" all over the place. They're just part 
of my overall site design, and have no bearing on anything.

2. The kanji 江 which appears at the very end of the first chapter. 
There's a reason that's there, and it's a very important reason. In the 
interests of not spoiling anything for those who want to learn what it 
represents through the natural course of the story, I will now include 
ancient, old-school spoiler space before explaining why that is there 
and why it is important that it's there. Before explaining further, 
though, I will address the concern over its presence and the reader's 
inability to, well...READ it:

/It's going to be explained./ In a context that will make sense to 
readers reading the story in English.

Rest assured, if it weren't /important and plot-critical /for certain 
Japanese text characters to appear in the story, they wouldn't. I'm not 
that cruel to readers. Even though I won't budge on stylistic usage of 
Japanese, that's something I usually only reserve for story titles and 
non-plot-critical usage.

That having been said, I will explain why it's there below, past the 
spoiler space.

As alluded to in the preface, the first arc of this story deals with a 
serial killer. There will be a succession of victims, each with a single 
character burned into his or her forehead by the killer.

Which, when assembled in order, read:

江戸川コナン.

For those who can't read Japanese: "Edogawa Conan".

Given the context, it wouldn't make sense for it to be in English. It 
also adds to the mystery, as the reader has to try to figure out what's 
going on. (Also, just using the romaji would call for like, twelve dead 
bodies, which is twice as many as I want to have.)
