While I can certainly see your point, I respectfully disagree.

Certainly, for centuries, the written word on page has stood alone and 
served its purpose beautifully, and still does to this day.

But even the greatest writers use devices such as illustrations and font 
changes, and bolding and italics have been commonplace for decades.

In my own fanfics, I use more than bolding and italics, I make regular use 
of special formatting, font variation, special text colors, and images.

It isn't a crutch, it's a stylistic choice made to embellish the story and 
enhance the reading experience. Certainly the story content is virtually 
identical in plain text, but it's the difference between having a dry 
sandwich, or putting mayonnaise or mustard on it. Certainly the sandwich is 
the same sandwich either way, but the latter has added flavor that enhances 
the experience.
