So the difference here is that Kyon plays video games instead of
reading books and so doesn't have the literary references for his
narration?

And clearly the strangest suggestion I've made all year, but this
story feels like it's set in the gender-flipped version. Just try
reading it through with the genders flipped and see for yourself.
