If you are not going to allow their, then you cannot allow them. It
would be best to use all plurals. However, original usage of they,
their, and them actually did allow usage as a non-gendered singular
pronoun. Recently, we have seen a shift in academic circles once again
allowing the usage of they/their/them as non-gendered singular
pronouns.
