Perhaps you could follow the example of Azumanga Daioh.  When Osaka  
is introduced Yukari sensei and Tomo expect her to talk in a  
stereotypical Kansai accent, and when she talks standard Japanese  
accuse her of being a fake Osakan until she uses some Kansai slang  
just to shut them up.  In other words, a lot like your experience  
with Southern accent.
