IIRC There was a US Navy program using Aleutian based aircraft to  
attack northern Japan.  The main purpose was to make the Japanese  
believe Hokkaido was under serious threat and tie down troops and  
aircraft there that otherwise would have been redeployed to the  
south.  NOVA had an episode about excavating a crashed bomber found  
in Russian territory that had been part of that program.
