Actually, MBtC/L&K is hinted at fairly clearly in the
anime. The first clue is Kyon's paean to being
ordinary in the first scene of Ep. 1. Who talks about
how happy they are to be ordinary, how it's all they
want? Short answer: someone who ISN'T.
If you're going off how Itsuki tells Kyon he's an
ordinary mortal in Ep. 4, this is a series with a
veritable parade of unreliable narrators. Kyon IS
ordinary - *as far as Itsuki's organisation knows*.
If you'll notice, there is one entity Yuki always
obeys without question. He is neither the Collective
Data Entity nor Haruhi. And in the novels, when push
came to shove, the Collective Data Entity bowed to
Kyon's will.
Mikuru tells Kyon a LOT more than she should, and
breaks the time-traveller rules for him (mostly in the
novels, true, but that will change if they animate
Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody).
Ergo: whatever else he is, Kyon is NOT an ordinary
mortal boy.

I believe in dragons, unicorns, good men
and other mythical creatures.
