Point of Order: In the anime, Kyon is pretty clearly a mortal. Having  
not read the manga and not being in a position to currently do so, I  
can't really offer much of a viewpoint.

That said, my theory is that Haruhi is a sealed Kami or Goddess or  
the avatar of such. Her seal is twofold. One, is of course, her being  
mortal.

The second is Kyon. His purpose is to provide Haruhi with a  
distraction, a way to not only ignore some of the stranger happenings  
around her and figuring out her connection to them (which would break  
the seal) but to keep her attached to the mortal life. Preffering it.
