You're kidding, right? AFAICT, that was basically the default formatting 
for any client made prior to maybe a year ago, with no artificial 
carriage returns!

Yes, it was a little annoying that the columns were as circumscribed as 
they were in Gmail's /web/ interface, but I found that all I had to do 
was remember to go over it in Thunderbird instead and it looked great!
