Heya. Posting this tonight specifically for those who got "disabled
from bouncing" notifications from the list server.
In the past couple of days, Mailman (the list server) has been
collecting messages that peoples' email addresses were bouncing from
specific domains. I've just checked things on my side, and realized
that I did not have the SPF record published in DNS correctly - one
typo, a couple of transposed letters, was all it took for things to not
work correctly.
Technical explanation: The SPF record (stands for Sender Policy
Framework) is a record in DNS (that thing that tells your computer what
IP address a domain name translates to - so you don't have to remember
206.225.172.6, you remember 'chez-vrolet.net' instead) that tells email
servers around the internet who is allowed to send mail through a given
server. It looks kind of arcane, but the way mine is supposed to be
configured is such that any mail that comes from my domain name is
allowed from my server - and anything else is "soft failed" at this
time. The side effect seems to be that anybody posting to the list may
be considered suspect, on account the "From" address is almost
invariably *not* a chez-vrolet.net email address. The front of the
record must start with 'v=spf1' - however, I transposed two letters and
it was published as 'v=sfp1', which just won't work and is not
recognized at all.
At this time, I am looking into how to resolve this so that we don't
get people *not* getting mail from the list they have subscribed to. I
might not be able to completely resolve this, but it's looking
optimistic.
