The Arthurian Chronicles themselves aren't quite that old (King Arthur was
in the 5th or 6th century AD, apparently, and his stories didn't appear
until after 1000, maybe after 1100).  I thought Lancelot was original to
those tales?  (Though, yes, adding Lancelot to the Arthurian Chronicles was
otherwise an example.)

Then again, this would be the right sort of story, and perhaps the
difference in maximum chain length between one and two thousand years is
not so high.
