Anyone wants to remake my dead fics. You have got my permission. Just on the 
ones where I had a co-author you must ask their permission too.

(My e-mail client has had quite a number of updates since
2007, so I hope I remember how to format this correctly.)

As it happens, I have 2¢ to add to this topic, too. I have, on
several occasions, searched for authors whose works are no
longer archived anywhere on the Internet and exist only as
saved pages on my hard drive. (The authors in question were
from Sailor Moon fandom, and were never big names.) As
another poster here has observed, there are people who are
nothing more than a pseudonym and a dead e-mail address,
often from an e-mail provider that went out of business years
ago, and that is what I encountered when I embarked on these
little quests. What to do when there are no leads to follow?

My goal, in each instance, was to ask permission to write a
remake or reimagining of the work, rather than an outright
continuation. This is what used to be called a 'fanfanfic',
at least in certain fandoms. It eliminates the issue of pulling
a Holy Grail (i.e. finishing a story when the intentions of the
original author are unknown and unknowable; this is one of
the most notable historical instances of fan fiction). The
down side is that it involves starting more or less from
scratch, with only a rough blueprint to follow. Not the same
as a direct continuation.

The basic principle remains the same, though: Always ask
permission, even if there is no hope of a response, and, if
there IS no response, be certain to include due credit and
apology in the foreword to a story as a courtesy. This is how
I treat fanfanfics; I imagine the same principle applies to
direct continuations.
