I really, REALLY hate to play devil's advocate for CKK, but...

There are fanfic writers and other Internet creative types who are 
private to the point that *nobody* online knows who they really are or 
how to contact them if they're not heard from in some time. Or whose 
offline friends and family simply won't bother to respond to requests 
for information about their well-being. It's not outside the realm of 
possibility for a fanfic writer to pass away without the fanfiction 
community at large ever knowing.

Likely? No. But possible.
