I certainly wouldn't make it more in the present than what printed text is capable of.  There are certain html trends that were really "in" for a while that have since become passe which I would never, ever want to see in a 'fic.  (Remember the blink tag? I certainly don't want to.  And don't get me started on sparklecode.)
