I'd suggest the term 'hit and miss.'
Sometimes you get good reviews, detailed and insightful.
Other times it's "Rite more" (misspelling intentional on my part), flames, or the like.
Part of the reason the feedback on the list works is because of 'who' is on it, the old timers who
were fanfic when fanfic wasn't cool.
FF.net can be likened to a public library where every little kid can come in and read and leave notes about what they liked or disliked.
FFML is more like a private club or gathering about stories.
If we try and open it up, get more people in, we run the risk of drawing in too many, or the wrong people. Those who don't want to work for the story, or those who think they're great authors just because.
If we don't open it up, then it will eventually die.
Only thing I can think of to prevent it is maybe limit it to invitation only? Trolling FF.net for those authors we think make the cut, and inviting them in?
Though that only gets us authors, not critiquers.
What we need, is to find a way to do both.
Not to mention revive the people who (like myself) lurk more than post.
Though on my part, it's partially because with the FFML slowing down, I just haven't found many fics that interest me enough to post critiques for. Or I can't find the time to do more than read.
