It was, many thought, easier to justify carrying a gun when it had an AI.
Essentially a droid minus any locomotion, the AI would prevent unintended
discharge, and lessen friendly fire incidents (though, as a failsafe, the
one thing they could not do was refuse to fire upon trigger pull).  The
Rebellion had long since hacked Imperial AIs, buying precious but slight
advantage in firefights when troopers' guns would keep missing (but only
for so long).

But that caused encounters like this, where two parties of ambiguous
standing faced one another down, each with an AI equipped gun.  They
talked, via their silent wireless link, debating who should live and who
should die.  It was evident that one of their owners would not be walking
away alive, not given the words being exchanged and that both guns were
clear of their holsters.

(It was, one might note, a blessing that the guns were programmed to sleep
when not drawn.  Even the most basic artificial sentience got bored when
unable to do anything - even move - for hours at a time, and slowly growing
insanities in charge of weapons was something none but the most sociopathic
truly desired.  A recurring joke was jealousy at how fast gun AIs could
wake up.)

What decided the issue was practicality and maintenance.  The bounty hunter
could have brought the bounty in alive easily for a bigger bounty, but did
not feel like it.  Further, the hunter's gun had barely been cleaned once
or twice since purchase, while the bounty was enough of a mechanic to
maintain her own starship, and made certain her gun was in working order.
Having thus decided, the one gun adjusted its focusing lenses and barrel
geometry ever so slightly, to miss by just enough, while the other went
about its business separate of any trigger pull.
