Well, there HAVE been multiple related series aired, specifically 
Tenchi Muyo GXP, and Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari.

Main Character from GXP is from the town close to the Temple where 
Ryoko was imprisoned, and Tenchi and his girls appear in 2 episodes, 
and the main character in ISM is  Tenchi's  half-brother, through his 
father's second marriage, and Washuu and Ryo-Ohki make appearances in 
flashbacks.
