I'm not so sure about mobi, but epub's are really just html files with a little
xml glue, all packed together in a ZIP archive that's renamed EPUB so you know
what it is. So almost anyone can make an epub, at the very least.
Regarding PDFs, I can understand why they've gone out of vogue, but I think
PDFs with proper page sizes could still be usable for e-readers, tablets, and
the like. LaTeX documents can be processed to put out PDFs with highly
customizable page sizes, and it's as easy as changing one line in the source
file. Granted, LaTeX is still meant more for simulating the look of physical
pages, so it's not quite as versatile as reflowable text, but with a page size
tuned to the size of the reader, it seems to do a decent job. And I've always
liked the automatic TOC and page numbering and such.
(Here ends LaTeX sales pitch.)
Anyway, I'm enjoying having these stories in a nice, portable format. Thank you
for taking the time to do this, Mr. Palmer.
