Which is kind the point of fanfiction in the first place.
The wonderful thing about fanfiction is that it's a wide open sandbox. We're
not here to create carbon copies of what already exists. We're here to
explore the avenues of possibility a work has to offer. How far a writer
strays from the original tone of a series is a matter of preference, whether
it's a tongue-in-cheek parody of the original (such as Andrew Huang's
Evanjellydonut) or stories that do in fact mesh precisely with the tone and
style of the original, or stories that go somewhere dangerous and disturbing
(The Bitter End, anyone?). For most writers, fanfiction is about doing
something different, and the challenge is to make it compelling, even if
(ESPECIALLY if) it takes on a tone completely unlike the source material.
If the reader doesn't particularly like where the writer goes with the
story, then there's a simple solution: Stop reading it. Anything beyond that
is entirely unnecessary and uncallled for.
