AUTHOR'S FOREWORD

Of the numerous Yotsuba&! fanfics I'm currently working on which I have only
revealed the existence of to two people, this is one which was written in
about two hours on the spur of the moment this morning, so naturally THIS
would wind up being my first published foray into Y&! fanfic. Not the Big
Damn Epic, not the incredibly WEIRD thing I don't really even want to write
in the first place, but this.

Which is based on a dropped plot thread from a Yotsuba&! H-doujinshi, no
less.

Okay, so...yeah, there's the lime tag, so you know this isn't exactly clean.
And being based on something from an H-doujinshi should be a warning, too.
And no, it does NOT involve Yotsuba herself. At all. Because that's just
sick.

It involves Miura and Ena.

For those who have never read the "Pretty Neighbor" doujinshi series (safe
bet everyone here), I'll provide a brief summary after the fic of the
specific events referenced herein. Whether you actually read that synopsis
is entirely up to you; it is not necessary to really understand what's going
on here, and probably isn't very good for your overall mental health either.

For those who HAVE read Pretty Neighbor, or who are Googling it right now,
this is based directly on PN #4.

Despite all these dire and ominous warnings, I promise you this story is
very cute and enjoyable. So without further ado...

Miura sat morosely on a swing in the park, staring down at the ground,
seeing nothing.

Nothing. That's what she had felt like since that day...

The worst day of her brief existence on this planet. The day that the
normally cocky, sarcastic, worldly Miura died and gave birth to the
listless, despondent, pathetic wretch that bore the same name and face.

Ena had not reappeared since that day. Miura feared she may never see her
again. Of course, in a way, that was probably for the best--surely after the
way she had just run off that day, Ena would never want to see or speak to
her again...right?

That had to be it, Miura decided. Ena was totally avoiding her.

"God, I'm so STUPID!" Miura said, beating herself on the head with a fist.
"Stupid, stupid...I totally blew it! I suck..."

"Ten year old whatever-the-hells shouldn't be sucking or blowing anything,"
a deep voice replied, causing Miura to jump. She fell backwards off the
swing, landing ass-first in the dirt. Wincing, she looked up at the source
of that voice, and scowled.

"And what about the smartass kaijuu talking about things like that in front
of a ten year old?" she retorted, but without her usual fire.

Jumbo crouched down and offered Miura a hand. Once she stood up and had
dusted herself off, Jumbo peered intently into her face.

"What?" Miura asked.

"You want to talk about it?"

"Talk about what?"

"Whatever's gotten you so depressed," Jumbo said softly. "You're not your
usual self."

"Sorry for not being my usual self," Miura muttered, looking away.

"Miura...I'm serious. Whatever's bothering you...I want to know."

"Why?" Miura asked suspiciously.

"Because I care about you. We're friends, right?"

"We are?"

"Of course we are!" Jumbo boomed. "And friends don't keep secrets from each
other!"

("Friends don't keep secrets from each other, right?")

Miura cringed. "I used to think that."

"What do you mean?"

The short-haired girl bowed her head and sighed. "Ena hates me."

Jumbo blinked. "Ena hates you? Since when?"

"Since a few days ago," Miura said, sitting back down on the swing. "Since I
said the stupidest thing in the whole world and she ran away."

Jumbo tilted his head. "That doesn't sound like Ena. What was it you said
that made her run away?"

Miura was silent for a long moment. She bowed her head and blushed before
answering, quietly, "I kinda...love confession..."

"I'm sorry, I didn't hear that."

"I said I confessed my feelings to Ena," Miura repeated, looking down and
away. "And she just ran off without even saying anything."

Jumbo stood up and pointed at Miura in an exaggerated fashion. "I KNEW IT! I
knew you were really a boy all along!"

Aggravated, Miura hopped off the swing and dropped her pants and underwear.
"Who's a boy? Where do you see a boy here?!" she demanded hotly.

"....uh....."

Miura quickly pulled her pants back up and stuffed her hands in her pockets.
"'s what I thought, dummy."

Jumbo cleared his throat loudly to cover the awkwardness of the moment. "So
uh...you told Ena you..."

"Yeah."

"And you're worried she hates you now because you..."

"Yeah."

"Hmm. That IS a problem."

"Yeah."

"Have you tried calling her or going over there?" Jumbo asked.

Miura shook her head. "I...I feel humiliated enough as it is. If Ena ever
wants to talk to me again, she will. But she ran off, so she must hate me,
so..."

Jumbo scratched at his left temple. "I thought you were smarter than that,"
he said. "I mean, you probably just confused or surprised her, and she had a
panic attack. It happens. But now she may be desperate to talk to you again
and sort it all out, but she's embarassed to call or visit you because she
ran away..."

Miura frowned. "In other words, we're both waiting for the other one to make
the first move?"

"Most likely."

Miura sighed. "I don't know," she said, shaking her head. "It took me so
long to work up the courage to tell her how I feel, and...I just don't have
anything left." She sagged like a deflating balloon. "I'm so pathetic. Maybe
I should just--"

"MIURA-CHAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!"

Miura's head jerked up sharply; Jumbo turned to face the source of the
voice. Ena was running up, cheerful as ever, waving at them.

"E-Ena," Miura said quietly, blushing faintly.

"Good luck," Jumbo whispered before turning to wave at Ena.

The long-haired girl skidded to a halt, bracing her hands on her knees to
catch her breath, and smiled sunnily at them. "Konnichiwa, Miura-chan,
Jumbo-san!"

"Yo," Jumbo replied.

"H-hey, Ena," Miura said, her voice catching.

"I'm sorry I haven't called you or anything in a few days," Ena said.
"Things have been really REALLY weird over at my house lately." She paused.
"Oh! And I'm sorry I ran off like that all of a sudden the other day. You
were trying to tell me something and I just couldn't focus because I had so
much on my mind and that was really rude of me and I'm sorry," she said in a
rush, bowing.

Miura blinked. "You...didn't hear what I said? Not at all?"

"Nothing past--" Suddenly remembering Jumbo was there, she blushed and
whispered "--you know, what you said THAT feeling was." More loudly, she
added, "I just had so much on my mind and then you said that and I..." She
paused, flustered. "I'm sorry, Miura-chan. I really am. I'm a rotten friend,
just running off on you like that."

Miura blinked. "So...you really didn't hear what I said past that?" she
asked.

"I'm REALLY REALLY sorry," Ena said, rubbing the back of her head and
giggling nervously. "Um...you're not too mad at me, are you?"

Miura tilted her head and smiled. "Nah, I could never be mad at you, Ena."

Jumbo suddenly stood up. "Well, I've got things to do. You feeling better,
Miura? Good." He waved. "Take care!"

As he walked off, Ena blinked. "Were you sick or something, Miura-chan?"

"Yeah, kinda," Miura replied, looking up at the sky. "You could say it
was...a sickness of the heart." She smiled at Ena. "But I think I'm better
now."

"A sickness of the heart?" Ena wondered.

"I thought..." Miura began, then shook her head. "But it was just a
misunderstanding." She stood up and walked closer to Ena, hands in her
pockets. "So, about that...the other day...are you okay now? You...don't
have to tell me about it, if you don't want--"

"Friends don't keep secrets from each other, right?" Ena said. "That's what
you told me, remember?"

"Ah...yeah, right," Miura replied.

"But I can tell you about that later, it's...yeah, I'll tell you about it
later." Ena put her hands on Miura's shoulders. "Before that, I want you to
finish telling me what you were trying to tell me the other day, before I
got distracted and ran off."

"Ah! Um...that was..."

"Friends don't keep--"

"Secrets, yeah, yeah," Miura said, looking down and to the side, blushing
faintly. She swallowed nervously. "Um...this is kinda hard for me, Ena. I
mean it took a long time to work up the courage to say it the other day,
and..."

Ena blinked, tilting her head. "Miura-chan?"

"And after you ran off I thought you hated me and were never gonna talk to
me again and I've been so miserable ever since and I'm glad it was just a
misunderstanding but now I'm afraid you really WILL hate me and run off and
hate me and..."

"Miura-chan!" Ena exclaimed, shocked. "I could never hate you! You're my
best friend! What--"

Suddenly, Miura locked gazes with Ena, her eyes fierce and serious. "Promise
me," she said. "Promise you won't run away, no matter how upset you are with
me."

"Upset with--" Ena blinked. "Are you moving away or something, Miura-chan?"
she asked, horror-struck.

"No, it's nothing like that," Miura said, shaking her head. "Just...promise,
okay?"

"I won't run away from you, Miura-chan. Not ever. Why would you even
think--"

"Because I'm in love with you and I'm scared you'll hate me for being
weird," Miura blurted.

Ena blinked several times, mouth agape. "You're...what...?"

Miura took a deep breath, and placed her hands on Ena's shoulders. Gently,
she pulled the other girl closer, and softly pressed her lips against Ena's
in a brief, inexperienced kiss.

"I love you, Ena," she whispered softly.

Ena's face turned completely red. She stood there, shocked, for a long time.
Sighing, Miura dropped her hands to her sides and turned away. "But you
could never feel that way about me, could you?" she asked, looking down.
"Because I'm a freak, a girl who dresses and talks like a boy and falls in
love with other girls..."

She felt a gentle touch on her shoulder, and turned. Ena was peering at her
intently, face still red, but her expression was not one of horror; rather,
it was tender concern. "You're...you're not a freak, Miura-chan," Ena said.
"Um, I..." She paused. "Okay I really wasn't expecting anything like that
and I'm kind of in shock right now, but the absolute last thing I'd ever do
is hate you."

"Ena..."

"I, um...I just...I mean it never even occurred to me that you might have
those kinds of feelings, so I'm totally not prepared to respond," Ena said.
"But I don't hate you and I'm not gonna run away."

Miura heaved a sigh of relief. "Thank goodness. I was so afraid I'd lose
you."

"I don't know if I...if I can be what you want me to be, Miura-chan. I mean
I really need to think about that, but...even if...even if I can't handle
that, I'm still your best friend. Forever." She smiled. "That's not a
rejection, by the way. I just need time to figure out if I feel the same
way."

Miura nodded. "Take all the time you need, Ena. I'm not goin' anywhere." She
sat down on the ground, then, looking up at the sky. "So, tell me about what
happened after you left the other day."

Ena's face turned red again. "Now I feel nervous about telling you," she
said shakily, sitting down beside Miura. "Now that I know how you feel about
me, there's no telling how you'll react..."

Miura raised an eyebrow. "That sounds ominous."

Ena took a deep breath. "Okay, it's like this..."

----------------------------------

Ena finished speaking and turned to look at Miura. The other girl's face was
several shades redder than her own had been earlier, and her jaw was
practically scraping the ground.

"You've gotta be kidding," Miura whispered. "No WAY that can be for real."

"It is," Ena said, blushing. "Are you mad at me?"

Miura blinked. "Mad at you? Why would I be mad at you?"

"Um...'cause you wanna be my girlfriend and I had sex with a guy old enough
to be my dad," Ena said.

"Yeah, but you didn't know about my feelings before that happened, right?"
Miura pointed out. "No way I'm mad at you. Mad at HIM maybe. Mad at ASAGI,
definitely. But more than anything I'm just REALLY freaked out right now."

"I still kinda am too, even though--" She trailed off, then shrugged. "It
fixed things, kinda. I wasn't happy with what I thought was going on, but at
least now I know things are back to normal."

"Back to n--" Miura spluttered. "There's not ONE DAMN THING ABOUT ANY OF
THAT that's NORMAL!!" She paused, then tilted her head thoughtfully. "Well
okay, Fuuka and Yotsuba's dad going at it like rabbits, that's not really
weird. But the rest of that is totally WRONG."

Ena started to sniffle, and Miura flinched. "Um...I'm not saying YOU did
anything wrong, Ena," she hastily amended. "I just mean that...you should
never have been put in that situation to begin with." She handed Ena her
handkerchief. "So don't cry, okay? I'm sorry."

Ena wiped her eyes. "No, you were right. My bitch sister and that horny
idiot turned me into a slut--"

"You are NOT a slut!" Miura cried. "Don't ever call yourself a slut again,
Ena!"

"...sorry."

Miura sighed, wrapping an arm around Ena's shoulders and drawing her close.
Ena laid her head on Miura's shoulder and sniffled quietly. "Don't ever
blame yourself for being surrounded by perverts and getting pulled into
their weird perverted drama, okay?"

"Okay."

"Because what they did to you is totally not okay. And I know you said you
asked him to do that, but it doesn't count since Asagi messed with your head
the way she did."

Ena sighed. "Yeah, she really did." She scowled. "I had no idea she was such
a monster bitch."

"Yeah, well we'd better warn Jumbo about her. There's no telling what would
happen if she warped HIS mind."

"He'd never believe it and there's NO *WAY* I'm telling Jumbo-san about what
happened with me and Koiwai-san. He'd probably kill him."

"Probably."

"Unless he's a weird pervert too and we just don't know yet."

Miura smirked. "He isn't. If he was, I'd know."

"Eh?"

"Nothing," Miura said dismissively.

For a moment, they listened to the birds and cicadas in silence.

"Ne, Miura-chan?"

"Yeah?"

"Um...if I decided I love you back, um..." Ena blushed. "I mean, I've had
sex with a man, so, I mean...isn't that against the rules?"

Miura frowned. "Rules?"

Ena bowed her head. "Well if we're...you know, together...then we can both
only like girls, right? But I did that--"

"Uhh...Ena...I don't think there's any such thing as rules about this kind
of thing," Miura said.

"Oh," Ena replied. "That's good, then."

"Yeah."

Ena snuggled a little closer to Miura, who held her more tightly, and they
sat in silence until sunset.

As the sky turned many different colors while the sun dipped below the
horizon, Miura stood up and stretched. "We probably better go home now."

"Yeah." Ena stood and smoothed out her skirt, brushing grass off her rear
end. "Oh, before I go..."

"Yeah?"

Ena suddenly reached out and pulled Miura into a fierce embrace. Her lips
lingered on Miura's far longer than Miura's had during their earlier kiss.

And then Ena was gone, and Miura stood there, blinking, a warm blush
spreading across her face.

After a moment, she smiled and headed home with a spring in her step.

THE EXPLANATION
or, "Wait Ena had sex with Koiwai WTF?"

The Pretty Neighbor doujinshi series MOSTLY deals with Koiwai and Fuuka and
handles it very tastefully, but PN #3 and PN #4 veered off into very weird
terrain.

In PN #2, Ena walks in on Koiwai and Fuuka. She's a little freaked out but
ultimately decides it's not that big a deal.

Then in PN #3, she walks in on Koiwai and *ASAGI*. In the PN series, Asagi
is a complete amoral bitch, and her primary motivation is causing Fuuka to
suffer by stealing her lover. So Asagi more or less blackmails Koiwai into
having sex with her in PN #3, and Ena just happens to come home before
they're finished.

In PN #4, Ena angsts about what she's seen. She's furious at Koiwai for
two-timing her sisters and doing such "disgusting" things with them. She
also has her very first experience ever with being horny, and it completely
weirds her out. She goes off with Miura, and they start talking, and Ena
tells Miura about her weird feeling; Miura explains the entire concept of
being horny to Ena, and then proceeds to deliver a carefully prepared love
confession--which Ena never hears, because she's already run off to try to
get her mind and body back under control. She runs into Koiwai purely by
chance, and immediately faints. He takes her home, and she wakes up to find
Koiwai and Asagi sitting in her room watching her, worried about her. Or so
it seems. Because once she's awake, Asagi starts molesting her right in
front of Koiwai. She fills Ena's head with the notion that Sex Is Okay, then
brings her nearly to climax...and then walks off, telling Koiwai to handle
the rest. It would have ended there, with Koiwai NOT willing to deflower a
ten year old, but Ena outright asks him to have sex with her, and since
Koiwai is a complete slave to his dick in this series, he does. Bizarrely,
this ultimately resolves EVERY point of conflict that Asagi created.

Poor Miura's love confession is never mentioned again. Hence this fic.
