That man had killed her father. Freed the humans who had been kept
underground for their own protection. And now he wanted to merge
with her - to physically take over her very body, the only thing she
could still call her own. Nia loathed Simon with every fiber of her
being.

She did what she had been created to do: smile, take it kindly, deal
with it as best she could. She had begun to understand, over the past
seven years, that real humans - even most beastmen - took a different
approach. They seethed, they destroyed, they expressed their anger in
sometimes counterproductive ways. But that was not for Nia.

Nia had been trained since creation to simply do what she could. To
smile, to be cheerful, to help. And, sure enough, that had her at the
side of the most powerful man on the planet. Another woman might have
strangled Simon long ago, or walked out on him. But that was not for
Nia.

Her father might be dead, but the beastmen survived. She was a symbol
of hope for many of them: they could call her one of their own, yet
she was among the barely questioned top powers on the planet. Her
mere existence inspired them to integrate with human society, for the
benefit of both. When contrasted to, say, the ineffectiveness of
Viral's rebellion, there was no question that hers was the proper
path.

Although, she had on occasion begun to question her approach. As
effective as it was, merely acting without considering how things
might be had lead her to misunderstandings. For instance, the first
time she cooked for Simon - yes, Simon and his molepig had liked it;
she calculated the cuisine to be optimal for him. However, sharing it
with the rest of the crew had proved to be a mistake. Ah, but
wondering on the future had not solved her immediate problems before,
so that was not for Nia.
