--------------
There is a great deal that Donna Noble doesn't know.
She doesn't know that she has saved the universe once, and Earth many
times over. She doesn't know that two government agencies have open
files on her, or that a sentient computer has a subroutine devoted
exclusively to tracking her credit cards and mobile calls. She goes
through her days unaware of government agents noting her every action
or that the australian barmaid down the street with the sharp tongue
and dark eyes is part of an elite group of men and women. A group
Donna is a member of, but doesn't know it. A group, who, in their own
way, is also watching her.
If Donna was to ever learn any of this, she would remember, and then
she would die.
Donna absorbed part of a Time Lord, gaining his expertise and
knowledge. But the brain of a Time Lord is far different than that of
a human. There are no hemispheres, it's compartmentalized for 13
different personalities, and is structured around a worldview that
regards movement space and time as little more than a stroll down the
block. All at once.
A human brain can not, will not process that much input and activity
without something giving way.
So her memory was erased. To save her life. she was made to forget.
But there is something her watchers don't know.
------------------
She lives inside Donna's brain. She has no name, not yet.
She is the fusion of Donna and the Time Lord she absorbed. When Donna
was made to forget, she was pushed down in Donna's subconscious.
Here, she grows and she waits. She is almost unaware of the tiny ball
of hate and anger at her core. Donna would have rather perished like
a dying star than be forced to forget the wonders she had seen.
Oh, she understands why it was done. Why he couldn't let her die. Its
not his way. No one dies if he can help it.
Still, deep down, she hates him.
---
She is Donna no longer, she understands that now. What she is
becoming is unclear. Human, no. Time Lord? Perhaps?
It has been months now. She watches through Donna's senses and when
Donna sleeps, she directs that tiny tendril of Regenerative Energy,
the vehicle that birthed her, through Donna's body, altering it.
Preparing it.
She can talk to Donna through her dreams now. Her voice is almost
lost in the babble of fantasies, memories, and desires, but she can
do it.
She still has no name.
----------------------------
It has been five years since she was created. The government agencies
now merely check up on Donna now and then. The subroutine still
diligently monitors her mobile and cards, but the A.I. which created
it has moved on to other things.
Donna is nearly ready. The regenerative energy is no longer tiny, for
in the changes it made, her body now produces it. A second heart has
been grown.
She still hates him. Plans for revenge move through her own
subconscious.
Inside Donna's mind, the entity puzzles. She lacks a TARDIS. Earth
has no way to construct one. But, she also needs a name. She is not
Donna Noble.
As Donna eats lunch in her cubicle, the entity's attention is drawn
by something on a web site. An ad, demanding an end to American
Tyranny in the Middle East and asking for support.
Tyranny. The word tickles at her.
As Donna goes throughout her day, the entity plays with the word.
Turning it over, adding letters, taking away letters. Replacing
letters with other letters.
Finally, she finds it. A name that suits her and she gives Donna a
nudge to find a job in Cardiff. There's that rift through the middle
of town. Something will turn up.
She looks at her new name and is content.
She is the Rani, and tomorrow is a new day.
----------------------
Notes: There were so many ways I could have gone with this. Donna
dies and regenerates, Donna wakes up and goes to work for Torchwood,
Donna seeds a new race of Time Lords amongst humans.
But then I started thinking of River Song's reaction. Sure, we
thought she was sympathizing with Donna over being made to forget.
But what if not? What if it was worse?
