The gifts from his friends were very touching.  I'm surprised there
weren't more, actually, but I guess people wouldn't want to come back
to visit.  That's a long way to travel just to get depressed and
weepy.

I know I like it so far.  I can tell, 'cause I got that twitch in my
eye when I reached the end and realised there isn't any more to read
yet.

As for your Author's Notes, remember that too much description takes
away from what's important, while not enough description leaves the
story bland.  Robert Jordan, bless his creative mind, borders on too
much.

I was able to follow the above quite nicely, and it flowed smoothly
for me.  I'd say you had enough, with some wiggle room.
