The would not be coming phrase is future looking or at least the situation
of the moment while the hadn't part is looking into the past.

I think that some form of the subjunctive mood is implied here. Please
pick one form and apply it.

Thanks. That sentence read funny to me too - I'd actually re-started this 
thing three times using three styles - present-tense omniscient, 
present-tense limited omniscient, and finally just decided to stick with 
past tense. Will check out the link!
