Who finds her: no one.
---
Tomoe Hotaru was angry.
At who, she did not know. Why, she could not fully comprehend. All
she could remember ever feeling, since waking up alone in that debris,
was anger. Someone had taken something precious from her - her family,
or perhaps someone even more special. She was alone in this world, and
she had the power to exact revenge.
Her revenge was not exact. It was, to massively understate things,
overkill.
She remembered crawling around for...had it been days? Weeks? Months?
It was hard to tell day from night in the deep parts of the rubble,
which she presumed might have once been her home. She had vague
memories of needing to eat and sleep, but those memories seemed ever so
distant, or perhaps a dream of a time that never actually was.
Certainly, several suns and moons had passed overhead since she had
left the place of her awakening, and the sensations never arose.
Likewise, the memories of wearing something other than her fuku -
perhaps a dream inspired by seeing what other people wore.
And then the uniformed men came. They spoke a tongue that was
maddeningly familiar, yet she could not utter it nor consciously
understand more than a few bits and pieces. "Feral", "twelve year
old", and "orphan" cropped up more than once, but trying to map these
phonemes to meaning was an exercise in frustration. So she did what
felt natural: she reached out for a glaive that was not there yet had
always been by her side, and brought it down.
She had seen no other person since that day. There were pictures,
machines, cities - beyond all doubt, people had lived on this world
once upon a time. Were they all gone? No - no, her anger demanded
otherwise. Surely, the one she sought was out there, somewhere, hiding
from her. She could not rest until she had taken her revenge.
After that, maybe she could deal with the nagging feeling that she was
supposed to restore what she had destroyed. That maybe the silence of
everything save her footsteps was not right. That maybe the barren
rock should be covered once more with green, before the sky - "oxygen",
another of those infuriating words! - was too far gone. But revenge
first.
