I'm not quite certain that this sentence is constructed in the best way
grammatically, but I can't quite put my finger on what makes me think
that and it reads fine, so *shrug*

Well I don't think you need a comma after "shirt" but I'm not sure. 
Also I'm not sure if "labcoat" is a single word.  Of course just 
mentioning the lab coat would probably be sufficient.  That his shirt is 
button-down is probably not worth mentioning.

The object within was...unremarkable, yet unusual all the same.

Really, it isn't a lantern.  It's a sculpture in the shape of a 19th 
century oil lantern but there's no place to put the kerosene, and the 
front of it is opaque.

Still, he hadn't woken up balding or with radiation burns or mutating into
some sort of horrible monster (he grimaced at that last thought; he REALLY
needed to stop watching those stupid tokusatsu shows with the kids), 

I don't know.  I'm more familiar with the Marvel side of things than DC,
but I'd imagine that the DC universe has had at least a few super-beings
created by radiation.

Well, yes, but he doesn't read DC comic books and hence has no way to 
know that he's now in one.
