This did not end with a punchline.
Actually it does, but you have to know both series.
Skuld looks a bit like Hotaru and like her tends to invent strange items
that are both cute and improbable, but her personality matches to Mikan.
Now I could have driven this home bluntly by either showing Skuld's
obvious reaction when she sees Hotaru's lab or I could have rewritten the
entire thing to splice Mikan entirely out of her own series and replace
her with Skuld.
That story would go that one day Hotaru moves next door to the temple of
the three goddesses and bonds so well with Skuld that her parents stop
moving her around so it's only a matter of time before the Academy catches
up to her.
Hotaru transfers to the Academy to keep them from noticing Skuld and then
a few months later Skuld follows Mikan's spliced out footsteps to the
Academy herself and so on.
On the other tentacle, a straight continuation of the current story could
lead to a situation where Skuld is expressing characteristics of both
Hotaru and Mikan which would drive the love tetrahedron up a few notches.
And then the grand finale would have the original girls return for a giant
robot battle. (Somehow no story with both Skuld and Hotaru in it can
avoid ending with a giant robot battle.)
But I guess that ELL doesn't like Gakuen Alice, so what would you rather
see instead, The EVA kids as the Fantastic Four (Spot the spineless
rubbery freak, the hot headed flamer and the invisible girl in that
group...) or Belldandy as queen of the Negaverse. (Yes Negaverse. She's
the big bad. No, really. But she's a very nice and considerate big bad.
Especially when she's fighting her sister, Sailor Mercury.)
And someday I might just get back to my old stories.
