While I share your loathing for the Pit's refusal to accept asterisks, I
have to disagree. Most published authors, at least, use italics or the
aforementioned single quotes. If I understand internet usage correctly,
asterisks tend to be used to denote bolded text when no font changes are
available. You may be better off using a / character instead. Bolded
thoughts tend to be obnoxious looking and some of us have email programs
that respond to the asterisk and slash marks appropriately.

I'm not sure how the revelation of Vermouth's identity equates to her
being immortal. Merely that, somehow, she has lost about twenty or so
years. We're still not sure if she took another certain someone's
identity or if that certain someone ever existed.
As far as Conan aging... I still say he looks older than he did at the
beginning of the story, whereas other character designs haven't changed
all that much.
The time period is also difficult. We almost have to ignore the seasonal
information in either the anime or the manga because if we trusted that
we'd have to believe that five or six years have passed.
And I'm not even going to comment on Gosho's occasional tendency to give
dates that make no sense. *sigh*
