Hey, as long as you don't want to go pro, or don't care if the readers 
are seeing bolded text when you use asterix, knock yourself out. Maybe 
everyone else figured that you were doing it to make up for the lack of 
italics.

I used to use bolds for emphasis when I first started writing. I came to 
the conclusion, over the years, that they look pretty sucky. Not quite 
to the point of shouting at the reader, but distracting nonetheless.
