If you don't have enough on your plate already, check out the appendix to
the first book of the Death Gate Cycle by Hickman/Weiss. One of the few
instances I can remember where the magic used in a book is described in
detail from an out-of-universe perspective...

including some conclusions about magic drawn from comparison of sources and
the like....
