Not to mention that they probably would have come down on him already
for using the "The Jedi Mind Trick" which is in fact a version of the
Imperius Curse, which is one of the three Forbidden Curses and a
garunteed one way trip to Azkaban.

On the other hand, this IS the Ministry of Magic under Fudge, which
has, or rather will, sucessfully demonsrate its utter inability to
find its ass with both hands, a mirror, a Compass Spell and detailed
directions, with map. They did prove that they couldn't tell between
a house elf using magic and Harry using magic.

Still, they would almost have to go have a look.

Unless, of course, it manifested as something different altogether- as in 
it
appeared to be a magical emission from something like a Doxy.

The Jedi Mind Trick isn't as powerful as the Imperius, though could still 
land Harry in a lot of hot water if he gets caught.
