Present tense. Usually don't care for that.

Nor I, but there's a reason to use present tense in this case.  Past
tense sends the message that at some point after the end of the story
someone tells it, whether an impersonal narrator or someone it happened
to.  Therefore the narrators of the story generally maintain a
consistent style because they remain the same people all through the
telling of the story.  In this case though, the narrator is going to age
from the equivalent of eight to something like thirty and with each
major leap forward in time I want to try to reflect the character's
growing maturity with how I write them.

On second thought maybe that was too gimmicky.
