Argh. Disregard that - I was momentarily mixing up "doujutsu" with
"technique made available by way of a bloodline limit". (I *really*
should know better than to post while half-asleep...)
That's exactly what a doujutsu IS. The kekkeigenkai has two
components: the physical aspect (a Hyuuga's or Uchiha's eyes,
Kimimaro's bones), and the techniques, or doujutsu, the kekkeigenkai
enables (Sharingan, Byakugan, Tsukiyomi, etc.)
...hmm. That's what I thought at first, but then when Eimii mentioned
the bit about "techniques using the eyes" it rang a bell, and when I
went to look it up I couldn't find any obviously related (to either
side) meaning in any of the kanji with that reading. It would help if
I
had an actual specific kanji to work from, but I've never picked up
even
the translated much less the untranslated manga (and AFAIR the term
was
never used in an episode title, so no help there).
I found the kanji used for 'dou' in 'doujutsu' by leafing through the
character databook. The kanji means the pupil of the eye, ergo
'doujutsu' most likely refers to techniques executed using the eyes.
(Thus, leafninja's definition is indeed correct ^_^;.) Doujutsu seems to
be just a group classification for eye techniques, and theoretically a
doujutsu would not need to be associated with specific bloodline to be
definied as such. It is also not a matter of being able to execute the
technique utilizing _just_ the eyes, because the Byakugan seems to
require seals for activation. In the character databooks, individual
doujutsu are still defined as either genjutsu or ninjutsu, depending on
effect.
