God, I love irony.
I wasn't going to say anything, but I was definitely thinking it.
(But yes, I agree--it IS *way* past time this problem was fixed.
Especially as it is indicative of a MAJOR security hole in the
list software...)
It's not so much a security hole in the list software as a remnant of
earlier times. The FFML runs off of software that is very similar to how
the old Bitnet lists used to run. Those lists didn't have spam blocking,
but they also didn't really need it, because spam wasn't anywhere near as
prevalent as it is these days.
As it is, this may require changing software. Alternatively, find a way to
'moderate' people who subscribe until they post their first (few)
message(s). If they're spammers, they get tossed off the list. If not,
they get their moderation removed. I know the FFML can prevent people from
posting. I'm just not certain that that can be set to happen automatically
upon subscription.
As a note, this is not (directly) because of the expansion of the FFML's
role. Not that I think many people will think that, but if there's even
one person, it's good to say it. The FFML is not that difficult to get
onto. The problems have been more that it was difficult to find. And, in
increasing our presence (in any of the ways we have), we've made ourselves
a target for spammers.
