I know that at least according to the explanations of suffixes I've read
this should be overly familiar, but that's the way it is (unless I'm
recalling incorrectly, of course).

It's more like "brusque" than familiar, I think.  The guys aren't being 
familiar so much as addressing the girls as if they were just more guys 
and they simply don't have time to waste on another syllable.
