Just a few comments

To start with, Shikamaru plays Shogi, not western chess.

Playing one does not mean he cannot or does not play the other.

Shogi and chess have many similarities, but this might be a good

opportunity to introduce the audience to what shogi is.

And what if the writer of the story isn't familiar with shogi? Did you think
of that?

My goodness, aren't we being a tad bit snarky? I'm simply raising an issue of canon (That he plays shogi not chess), and providing points where a bit of cultural relevance could be added without a great deal of work. 

Clearly Hinata can't even remember how the pieces move, so it's not like one would need to go into more than piece movement level of complexity here.

Or perhaps Hikaro no Othello is more to your taste?
