Wait, I'm confused.  The first stage of the chuunin exam was the written 
test, right?  And the second was the forest survival test, right?  So 
how can this be between the second and the third?

At the end of the forest survival test (where they had to get one of each scroll and make it to the building in the forest) they then had a battle round to fight. Ino and Sakura fought, as did Naruto and Kiba, and Gaara and Rock Lee, (among others) This eliminated Hinata, Kiba, Rock Lee, Ten Ten, and some sound chick, as well as both Ino and Sakura since they tied. 

Just to help clarify the issue.

Watching as Sakura held up the ridiculous green jumpsuit, nearly identical
to the ones he and Lee habitually wore, Gai flashed her one more blinding
grin and gave her an enthusiastic thumbs up. "Wear it with pride!"

Could be worse.  Could be orange.  At least green doesn't clash with pink.
