Thank you, Jason. To defend my point further, I would never steal an idea
from anohter author. What I use to improve are comments and criticisms.
LoveStruck was the one about the angel and the demon who fall in love and
move to New York City. One reader (who I see is still here) completely
PANNED the story, attacking several points and characterizations. This was,
oh, about four or five years ago and we are still embedded in the research
that was turned up by the research that was turned up by the research his
criticisms spawned. In fact, I still keep the man's C&C handy, because it
was the most vehement (albeit very polite) criticism we got, and, while
other criticism was constructive and appreciated, this particular one raised
issues that if we ever expect to be taken seriously by a publishing house,
we need to address. He didn't give us any new material for the story, just
criticized what was there, and put us on a long path to new material and
improved characterizations.
If he still remembers reviewing, I give him thanks as a writer.
Another point, on the topic of why the board is dying - I can only speak
from my own experiences. But not being a Ranma fan, or familiar with some
of the other anime typically written about in here, like I said, I haven't
seen much of interest. Like I said earlier (sort of), the face of anime has
evolved from Ranma 1/2 to Neon Genesis Evangelion and Full Metal Alchemist.
Perhaps our tastes have evolved with them.

Way back when, Original stories were posted here on occasion, they were

No one caused an uproar when that occurred. That being said, I never saw
public C&C posted for those original stories so I can't say how
effective posting it here was either.
I suspect that there are two reasons people don't do C&C on original
work:
1- This is a FANfiction mailing list. People are looking for expansion
to an existing series they love
2- People don't want to run into the situation where they do lots of C&C
work on someone's story, then the author turns around and publishes,
making a ton of cash, leaving the people who helped out with the story
feeling used.
There were a few people who broke into 'published' status. I don't think
anyone has ever felt 'used'.
I think it was because people felt that they could contribute better
commentary regarding a subject they knew (Ranma) versus one made out of
whole cloth. Also, there was generally dissatisfaction with original
fic quality. With a fanfic, you can worry less about plot (WAFF) or
characterization because you're running off of an established base. With
an original fic, that's not so.
On the other hand, if you could pull it off, WOW. One of the few fics
I've wanted to read over again (and can't find because I can't remember
the title) was an original fic following an immortal who (as I recall) had
been brainwashed into thinking he was a washed up racecar driver. All
these years on the ML, and that's one of the few I want to track down.

The sardines weren't worth the trouble. A few more shots, then
Ryoga-san would overheat and explode. Ducking around a corner,
I managed to lose him as I entered the ramshackle residence of
my Anime supplier.
One look at his face and I knew that I had been betrayed. "Tell me,"
I insisted. He refused, so I slammed him against the wall.
"Last chance. Where can Ranma-Ranma find good fanfics?"
"Try Jason Liao," he whispered, before he slumped to the floor.
I heard the sounds of a door splintering as I left through the
window, one step ahead of Tendo Heavy Industries...
