Ack.
Indeed, as Jorge Pratt said, and I am sure it hits
Lurker close too (although he's tougher than J.P.) it
does hit really just about home.
Myself, I have been busy these last years trying to
improve on writing. I think I have; but in doing so I
sacrificed my time to writing fics.
I do have my nihilistic side that frowns deeply at
"new converts"; these "n00bs" that don't know the
difference between Akira Toriyama and Akira Kurosawa,
or even Akira and Tetsuo. (I conveniently choose
forget that I probably was the same at one point,
although some of the latest cases encountered at Anime
Expo's are rather extreme.)
But again, just like Bear in .hack//, I can't stop
thinking, when I look back at my old Ranma/Dragonlance
fic for example, if I just left the characters there
to rot or even left Krynn worse for the wear.
You (Joseph) do raise a good point, though, there was
a time when I was also trying to prove myself as a
writer in fic competitions. Not in the RAAC, but in
some of the websites and webrings. I also remember
facing true C&C and actual MSTings done by beings with
an intellect rather than a childish delight in tearing
appart the work of their betters with nonsensical
blabberings.
In short, I guess my point is that where there is a
challenge there I find my interest. The challenge is
preventing the FFML from dying; and the answer is
writing.
I guess I won't expect lots of C&C, but I will also
finish a few of my fics. Out of respect for my
readers, myself, the characters, and their creators
themselves.

(Wouldn't hurt to have competitions, either! Deadlines
are good!)
