I have mixed feelings on opening up the list to other fandoms. Assuming that
the move was succesful and the FFML became the cool place for all fandoms to
post, then I imagine we would see fics of varying fandoms here in something
like the same ratio that they appear on fanfiction.net.
So for every 1 Ranma fic we'd get..
1.76 Ruruoni Kenshin fics
1.84 Beyblade fics
2.35 CCS fics
2.43 YuYuHakusho fics
3.54 Dragonball Z fics
3.80 Buffy fics
4.48 Naruto fics
5.08 Yu-Gi-Oh fics
8.08 Inuyasha fics
and 32.83 Harry Potter fics (!) (as an aside, if Ranma is a fic'd to death
genre, what on earth is Harry Potter?!)
Assuming that each person has the same likelihood of commenting, then the
ratio of posts is squared, so for every 1 Ranma-oriented list post there
would be 1078 Harry Potter oriented posts. I'm pretty sure the Ranma crew
will all just give up faced with that onslaught, and so will anyone else
interested in any fandom less popular than Ranma. In fact, even Naruto would
struggle, given that each 1 Naruto post would be accompanied by over 53 HP
posts. In fairly short order the list would consist nearly entirely of HP,
with a few IY, YGO, maybe Naruto and even more maybe Buffy. Anyone not into
those fandoms would have to find somewhere new.
The only real solution for that I think is partitioning. SO there's one list
for HP, one list for IY e.t.c...Certainly any awards would have to be fandom
specific I think, since otherwise a totally crap HP fic would beat a stellar
Ranma fic, just because there are more than 32 times as many voters for HP
fics. THis is what killed the anime fanfiction awards (what they tried to
replace the Ranma fanfiction awards with). Fanfiction is, like it or not,
divided on series grounds, and not recognising that is a recipe for
disaster.
