Ah, but that's the obvious choice, isn't it? Choosing Harry Potter is
hardly a fair example, since Harry Potter fanfiction these days is
practically synonymous with "omg crap."
Not terribly fair, that. Just like all other fanfic, HP fics are
subject to Sturgeon's Law -- 90% crap, 10% gold.
Unfortunately, the crap is far more in-your-face than the gold.
This isn't about "fair." As I just mentioned to Lurker in my reply, it's an
observation of fanfiction trends.
Head on over to the much-maligned fanfiction.net. Take a look at the Harry
Potter fanfiction count.
251,003.
Now take a look at Ranma 1/2: 7,646
Sailor Moon: 21,877
Naruto -- one of the latest things in anime: 34,309
Full Metal Alchemist: 11,206
Not even the most popular anime/manga comes even close to the massive
amounts of Harry Potter fanfiction being produced. And yes, as I also said
to Lurker, there are always gems amidst the sludge pile. But when the
sludge pile is *so freaking massive,* the chances of finding those gems
decreases proportionally.
Fair? No. Certainly not fair to the fanfic authors out there writing HP
gems.
But my point stands. You open the list to the HP fandom, and
statistically... well, we'll certainly get plenty of crit fodder. But if
that's what we're after... hey, let's go for it.
