First, I would like to say that I'm fairly in favor of opening up the list
to other fandoms.
I have some reservations about it, but I think overall, it will be a good
thing for the list. I have thought for a while that the FFML was where the
more mature authors posted their work when they wanted thoughtful criticism,
and places like FF.net was where they posted for ego-stroking "Nice Work"
and to have a semi-permanent archive.

I also agree that to open the list to some other fandoms, but not all would
be a bit awkward. how do you handle cross-overs between permitted fandoms
and banned fandoms? are they permitted because it's got something to do with
a "Good" fandom? If I were to write a Harry Potter/Sailor Moon cross over,
would it be permitted on the list? is it even permitted now? I really don't
know. I think so, because of the sailor moon aspect, but I've asked before
and not gotten a reply.

That said, I read a lot of different fandoms, but only write in a few,
because it's where my muse takes me. I don't really have anything that's
complete, and most of it's far too fragmented to inflict upon the rest of
the world. I would still have posted a Buffy: The Vampire Slayer fic here
for serious review, because I know it would have gotten that thoughtful
criticism that can't be reliably had elsewhere. That's the only way I'll
ever become a good writer, by receiving that kind of feedback, picking
things apart, tell me where I went wrong as well as where I went right...
Where else on the 'Net can you get that besides here? Nowhere I know of...

I currently have a B:tVS story being written on FF.net under "GandalfTG" and
I'm told "it's funny," and "great," and "keep writing." great feedback! This
is me. Being impressed. No really. from a brief survey of the past few fics
to be posted, every one of them received legitimate feedback.

Personally, I would love to see what people like Lurker, DB Sommer, Gary
Kleppe, and June "Karaohki" Geraci would have to say about my writings. THEY
are why I read fanfiction in the first place. hell, even if all I got from
one of them was a "LOL" it would mean more than the average unwashed masses
saying the same thing, imo... course, I believe that they would say more
than that, and it would be useful commentary as well.

The only part of this post I disagree with is the following:

If there are concerns about being flooded with Harry Potter fanfic, then
here's a suggestion. Exclude Harry Potter. Exclude Star Trek. Pick some
specific fandoms and say that the FFML isn't interested in those, due to
there already being numerous outlets. That can help keep a single fandom
from flooding the list, while still opening it up.

This type or exclusion screams of bias.

Besides, the hope is, if someone like Harry Potter and posts Harry
Potter, someone else here will help make it better.

Maybe, with some good review, the quality of Harry Potter fics will improve.

Back at the dawn of the FFML, I can only imagine what kind of horrid
Ranma fics were on the list.
