But, here's the part where I'm genuinely confused. I thought that's what the
people of this list abhorred about Fanfiction.net. That that's the only
"reviews" people get there. And here, you were supposed to be able to get
C&C, which is why it's 'better' to post to this list than FFN.

If you post to the FFML you are supposed to be prepared to have people
go over it looking for flaws; things that could be written better. That
doesn't mean however, that such critical responses are the only
acceptable ones. It just means that they are accepted here in a way
that they are not in many fiction mailing lists. It also means that
they are possible here in a way that they aren't really in
Fanfiction.net where you often have to log in and have to specifically
search out a story to see it, and you can't quote the story to do a line
by line critique. You aren't guaranteed such a critique just by posting
to the FFML, it depends on how active willing people are on the list at
the time you post, and not every story even calls for such a critique.
But you won't see it at all on fanfiction.net, because the software
simply doesn't accomodate it. Therefore any compliments or even
criticism you get there will be at best vague and biased toward the
positive since, after all, you have a self selected audience.
