The corrections are often appreciated, but when you receive a reply from
someone that's 90-100% correcting minor spelling and grammar errors, it
can actually be a bit annoying. It sparks a feeling of "You could take
the time to correct my typos, but not to say 'I liked this section, it
made me feel ______' or 'This passage in particular was _______'? Thanks
a ton."
Look. I do what I can. I'm not sure that my commentary would be all
that much more encouraging if more than half of the time I was saying,
"I didn't find this story particularly involving because I just didn't
care about the subject matter" or "I have no idea what any of this is
about" or even "I've seen this thing dozens of times before". It's
exactly that kind of reaction that has in the past led to people
deciding that Gundam or shoujo fiction was unwelcome here, because the
few people who are willing to comment on a regular basis have their
individual biases and end up seeming like a disproportionate part of the
list just because they are more involved. I hope my corrections are a
bit useful because passing on my generally sour attitude, I'm pretty
sure, wouldn't be.
When I still had the heart to write fics, getting any response at all
made me feel good, and even a minor grammatical correction or a
suggested better phrasing would let me improve the fic. I'm just trying
to pass that on. Maybe other people could do it better. I heartily
recommend that they try because I'm already giving what I've got to give.
