I agree wholeheartedly with the statements about the FFML being hard to
find. I've had to search it out twice. The first time, it was down, and the
FFML refuge was running. I joined it, and in time, posted a fic. Then Gary
ripped me a new one. I almost left. But then I calmed down, depersonalized
what he was saying, and realized many of his comments were true. I changed
my fic and grew as a writer. The FFML has been a place of learning for me,
and I think for most of us. We need to play up our history, our experience,
and our drive for quality. That will attract the writers who will bring
something to the table. Passion for writing and for good stories. Most of us
have websites of our own, or have had at some point. Most of us have some
level of HTML skill. We're the old hands who've been online since the heady
days of the 90's, when listservers were the cutting edge of virtual
communities. There's no reason that we can't put together a website with
some simple instructions on joining, why to join, and maybe even an
automated signup form. There's no reason we can't get banner space on
FF.netor google adwords, or others and spread the word of a writer's
community
that will polish your skills and help you learn. And teach you to help
others. For the enjoyment I get from the FFML, I'd pay a few bucks for some
ad space, or for a web hosting service. set up a paypal account for the FFML
and see what we can do. Let's define ourselves by our strengths, not by what
we aren't.
