Let me first off say that I love this list dearly.
Despite its flaws, it has provided an excellent forum
for viewing and discussing fanfiction, and I am
thankful for it. The Admins never get thanked enough
for keeping this place as well-kept as it is.
But it certainly seems that if we don't grow and
adapt, that we will continue on this decline.
However, the question remains: will opening up the
list really bring in new authors?
Even if we do open it up, how will we bring in new
authors? I know I found the list thanks to reading
some of Zen's work way back in 2000, in which it was
mentioned. It was more lucky accident than anything.
Personally I believe that unless all of its members
try to promote FFML awareness in the world wide web,
opening up the list won't do much good.
And what would a flood of new authors net us?
As much as the 'days of yore' are fondly remembered, I
also remember the ton of spam that I had to sort
through on a daily basis. And boy was I in trouble if
I forgot to check my mail for more than a couple of
days...
Although this topic is vitally important to the future
of the list, it is still clogging up my inbox. And
while in principle I am for expanding our author base,
I would hate to see the FFML degenerate into a
quagmire that a person has to wade through to find a
story that is worth reading.
Well, there's my two cents. ^_^

We haven't *officially* yet, but seeing as we've
got at least two mods in
favor of it, it's pretty much a go--but let's wait
until the admins actively
permit it before we go nuts with this kind of
thing, just to avoid rubbing
too many people the wrong way with a mob mentality
thing. ^_^
Actually, what we've got are one mod in favor, one
neutral, and one
who can't post his opinion because he's tempbanned.
At this point I'd invite anyone else who wants to
weigh in pro or con
to email your opinion on the subject to
<ffml-admins@anifics.com>.
Once we've heard from everybody who wants to be
heard from, we'll
decide.
This is not a ban on discussing it on the list, but
please use
judgment. Post to the list only if you've got a
point that hasn't been
made yet. "Me too" or "Me not" messages should be
sent to the admins
only.
